Fuel Injection systems can run rich and lean too……
Mixtures of fuel in an electronic fuel injection system can be made to be rich or lean intentionally with software and a host of bolt on parts. But more often than not, the improper fuel mixture is the result of a bad filter, fuel pump, or fuel injector and or the system’s response to it. Clogs in injectors lead to clogs in lines and pumps that work too hard.
The resulting performance you actually see hear and feel. Including the reduced life of your vehicle.
If your vehicle runs the engine fuel mixture too rich (too much gas for the air mixture) as a result of too much pressure or an elongated fuel injector pulse from the fuel map, the results can look and feel like this:
increase in fuel consumption
increase in carbon monoxide (CO) emissions
a rough or racing idle
carbon fouled spark plugs
surging motor at idle
surging vehicle at idle (those attached to automatic transmissions)
engine will not start at all. If you smell gas in the tailpipe, and it won’t start.
Check the sparkplugs again.
When the engine is not getting enough fuel the engine runs lean. Usually a lean mix results in an engine that:
won’t start
hard starts
vapor locks
runs roughly
hesitates on acceleration
or performs sluggishly
No fuel, no boom. Less fuel, less boom, or boom in wrong place. Too much fuel, it goes down the pipe and chokes your power away. The cause of lean misfire and the unmistakable hesitation and misfire on acceleration is usually due to timing or mixture.
NO THAT’S NOT A GUNSHOT!
